    Preliminary design study of hydrogen and ammonia resistojets for prime and auxiliary thrusters

    Designs of high performance resistojets for primary and auxiliary propulsion are described.Thruster power for the primary propulsion application was in the 2 to 3 kW range while auxiliary propulsion power per thruster was 0.15 to 0.25 kW. Propellants considered were hydrogen and ammonia. The report described design techniques used to forecast the temperature and energy flux distributions using mathematical modeling by personal microcomputer. BASIC language is used throughout to give the designer rapid interaction and control. Both designs integrate compact first stage coils with concentric tubular heaters. The hybrid heater design allows better thruster power matching with the spacecraft power bus. Projected specific impulse levels were 760 to 830 s for hydrogen and 380 to 410 s for ammonia

    Stability and Relative Stability of Linear Systems with Many Constant Time Delays

    A method of determining the stability of linear systems with many constant time delays is developed. This technique, an extension of the tau-decomposition method, is used to examine not only the stability but also the relative stability of retarded systems with many delays and a class of neutral equations with one delay. Analytical equations are derived for partitioning the delay space of a retarded system with two time delays. The stability of the system in each of the regions defined by the partitioning curves in the parameter plane is determined using the extended tau-decomposition method. In addition, relative stability boundaries are defined using the extended tau-decompositon method in association with parameter plane techniques. Several applications of the extended tau-decomposition method are presented and compared with stability results obtained from other analyses. In all cases the results obtained using the method outlined herein coincide with and extend those of previous investigations. The extended tau-decomposition method applied to systems with time delays requires less computational effort and yields more complete stability analyses than previous techniques

    Not In Our Backyard: Spectroscopic Support for the CLASH z=11 Candidate MACS0647-JD

    We report on our first set of spectroscopic Hubble Space Telescope observations of the z~11 candidate galaxy strongly lensed by the MACSJ0647.7+7015 galaxy cluster. The three lensed images are faint and we show that these early slitless grism observations are of sufficient depth to investigate whether this high-redshift candidate, identified by its strong photometric break at ~1.5 micron, could possibly be an emission line galaxy at a much lower redshift. While such an interloper would imply the existence of a rather peculiar object, we show here that such strong emission lines would clearly have been detected. Comparing realistic, two-dimensional simulations to these new observations we would expect the necessary emission lines to be detected at >5 sigma while we see no evidence for such lines in the dispersed data of any of the three lensed images. We therefore exclude that this object could be a low redshift emission line interloper, which significantly increases the likelihood of this candidate being a bona fide z~11 galaxy.Comment: 14 Pages. 6 Figures. 2nd revised version.
